If you know any friends or neighbors in our Dallas Lake Highlands apartment community who could benefit from a better night’s sleep, be sure to share this blog post with them! We could all use a little help now and then. Now, without further ado, let’s go to the tips!
Invest In The Best Bed
A bad bed means bad sleep, hands down. And even a bed that’s fine for someone else might not be the right bed for you. We recommend going to a mattress company where you can test out different firmnesses, fills, and price points that fit you best. Or if you have a decent mattress but would like it to be just a little softer, there are lots of excellent mattress toppers out there.
Beyond the mattress, a good pillow is key. We’ve all got one of those old pillows that have been around forever, but pillows older than about two years (or as little as six months for polyester pillows) should be thrown out and replaced with something better. Whether you go with memory foam, down-filled, or something else, a new pillow is going to give you the support and cleanliness you need for a good night’s sleep.
Have a Consistent Routine
We bet you’ve heard this one before, but it’s super important. It can be challenging, as a busy adult, to have a consistent schedule, but being as consistent as possible about when you sleep, wake, and wind down for the night can make all the difference.
Your body works best when it has a routine, so waking up at a consistent time and setting a typical bedtime (one that allows you at least 8 hours of sleep) is the single best way to ensure that you sleep well and feel rested when you wake.
Take Time to Wind Down
Similarly, having a wind-down routine can be a great way to signal to your body that it’s bedtime and help you get to sleep faster. Give yourself 30 minutes or more to do something relaxing before bed, whether that’s drinking some herbal tea, journaling to clear your mind, or listening to a fun podcast. And of course, brush your teeth, wash your face, take out your contacts, and all that good stuff. Your body will thank you.
Get Light at the Right Time
Your body evolved to sleep when it’s dark and wake when it’s light. Nowadays light pollution in the form of computer and phone screens make it more challenging than ever for your body to regulate itself as it should. Blue light, in particular, confuses your body’s Circadian rhythm, so take some time before bed to get away from computers, TVs, phones, and other screens.
Getting plenty of sunlight during the day will also help your body better regulate its Circadian rhythm while giving you a healthy dose of Vitamin D. If you have a particularly hard time with feeling sleepy at the right times, a low dose melatonin supplement can be found over the counter and may be a helpful addition to your nighttime routine.
